Spinal Canal Stenosis and its Treatment

In older individuals degeneration of the intervertebral discs and facet joints may combine to result in narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal canal stenosis).

Sciatica and its Treatment

Sciatica is a term that describes pain extending from the buttock into the leg and which radiates below the knee.

In the majority of cases (90%), symptoms of sciatica will settle spontaneously within a six to twelve week period.  Treatment is initially directed towards reducing discomfort so that you can remain activities both at work and at home.

Spinal Fusion

The treatment options for “mechanical” low back pain include the following:-

  1. Involvement in a rehabilitation program & modification of activities

  2. Lumbar Fusion:

  3. Pain management

Risks of Surgery

No form of treatment is without risk. Some of the adverse effects of surgery are predictable and some are unexpected.

Hospitalisation:

What to expect in Hospital at the time of spinal surgery.  The hospital staff are familiar with the routine management of patients undergoing spinal surgery or investigation.

Return to Activity

Return to work, general activity and sporting activity varies from case to case but you should expect to be restricted for at least six weeks, and up to three months.  This is however,  dependent on the type of surgery you will be having.

Research & Surgical Fees

“Your surgeon” will generally charge the Australian Medical Association (AMA) recommended fee for operations. This fee may, however, be discounted if payment is received within six weeks of the surgery and where special arrangements have been made with your insurance fund.

Donating Blood

Whenever it is anticipated that a blood transfusion will be required arrangements will be made for you to donate your own blood beforehand.
