Donating Blood

Autologous Blood Donation:

When it is anticipated that a blood transfusion will be required, arrangements will usually be made for you to donate your own blood beforehand.  This is called pre-donation of "autologous blood". You will be referred on to one of the pathology services to collect the blood required, and they will provide additional information about this process.

In some cases the pre-donation of autologous blood is not practical or in fact possible.  In this case your blood will be "cross matched" to enable transfusion with banked blood if it is needed.  The risk of contracting a transmissible disease through the transfusion of banked blood is extremely low.

Routine pre-operative evaluation of patients donating autologous blood includes screening for transmissible diseases such as hepatitis and HIV (AIDS), as is done when blood is donated to the Red Cross.  The screening is performed out of consideration to theatre staff even though the risk of contamination or exposure to body fluids that may transmit disease is minimised by taking appropriate (“universal”) precautions.
